Out of Sorts - A Lenten Devotional - Week 4

Happy 3rd week of Lent! We are a little more than halfway done Sarah Bessey’s book, “Out of Sorts”. This week we learned that in her deconstruction, Sarah discovered and rediscovered many things about her faith. It allowed her to unlearn things and learn new things. It allowed her to see things in a different light and reframe things. One thing she reframed in her faith that was very helpful for her was the idea of thinking about being a disciple verse a convert. Many churches are interested more in converts rather than disciples but in her journey, she felt Jesus was much more interested in disciples- people yearning to learn and participate in the kingdom of God.
Another interesting thing her deconstruction brought her was different ways to pray, worship or communicate with God. Growing up she was evangelical, but when she didn’t feel like she could rediscover her faith in that place anymore she was forced to find it elsewhere. She found it in the protestant world- in age old traditions. She started singing hymns and praying from the book of common prayer and lighting candles to remind herself of the sacred. This was all new and different to her but it showed her another part of God and allowed her to interact with God in a new way.
Have you ever interacted with God in a new way? Have you ever had to rediscover God when your faith was falling apart? What would it look like for you to get to know a different aspect of God this Lenten season?
I’ll leave you with this quote from Sarah:
“ I don’t think we give enough credit to the ones with the questions. Oftentimes they are simply saying out loud what the rest of us are thinking or wondering. The questions aren’t the threat- it’s the alternative to growing numb and complacent, the specter of a stalled-out journey, the encroaching quiet desperation that terrified Thoreau, or the silencing of one’s true self out of fear or a need to belong. Blessed are the wonderer’s who have the courage to live into the questions. Seems to me that sooner or later, whether we like the outcome or not, theirs is the answer.”
