Out of Sorts - A Lenten Devotional - Week 6

This Sunday we will start Holy Week. We will begin with the triumphal entry on Palm Sunday and make our way to Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and then finally finish off the week Celebrating the Resurrection on Easter. Our Lenten journey is almost over.
In our Lenten Book, Out Of Sorts Sarah Bessey is finishing up her book and really driving home how her faith has changed over the years. She used to believe that working in ministry was by and far a more faithful job than any “secular” job and now she looks back on that a laughs. Once you open up your understanding of God and realize how big God is- it does seem absurd we ever thought differently. She also talks about how in order to serve God or be faithful, it doesn’t have to look all big and bold and risky- it can look like everyday mundane things like raising kids or making meals for friends in need.
I think this book has been so fitting for Lent because whether or not you agree with everything she talks about or connect with what she is writing- she is authentic. There is much in here that I don’t connect with but I do connect with her authenticity. That to me is what Lent is about- finding beauty in the ordinary- learning to be yourself, faults and all- accepting the hard parts of life. It’s authentic.
How are you showing up authentically this Lenten season? How are you doing at accepting yourself for all of who you are? How are you doing at accepting the hard parts of your life? The inconsistencies of life? The contradictions?
As we head into this Holy Week I encourage you to let yourself be a little raw, a little vulnerable. Try to hold off on judging your thoughts and feelings and doubts and just let yourself be. Just let yourself take in what these services have for you and what God wants to disclose about Godself to you.
