Bonnie Sumerfield

Bonnie Sumerfield

Church Pianist

Bonnie Sumerfield was born in Phoenixville and grew up in Chester Springs, Pa.  She started piano lessons at age seven and never stopped playing, although her interests were many.  She has always been torn between the outdoors and the indoors.

First piano lessons were at Jaworski's Music Studio in Phoenixville.  Bonnie attended what was then the two-room West Pikeland School until fifth grade, and after that went to Downingtown schools.  During high school she studied piano with Dr. Lloyd Mitchell, who was then Dean of WCU's School of Music.

Boston Conservatory was Bonnie's choice for work on a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance, and she studied with Chandler Gregg.  She lived in the Boston area for eleven years teaching and playing piano and working at the Boston Music Company.  When she was awarded a graduate assistantship at West Chester University she moved back to Pennsylvania and completed a Masters Degree in Piano Accompanying.

Since then, Bonnie has taught at Philadelphia's Settlement Music School, Suburban Music School in Media, Millersville University, her own private studio and Malvern School of Music.  Choral accompanying has included the Wintersauce Chorale in Boston, the Exton Chorale under Bernice Hatch Brady and Reading Choral Society with Dr. David DeVenney.  She has always enjoyed every aspect of music making, and her music has taken her to a number of places in the U.S. and the U.K.

Currently, Bonnie is pianist for the Pennsylvania Eurythmy Ensemble and Covenant, teaches privately at the Malvern School of Music and Camphill Soltane and performs with friends whenever possible.  She is a member of local, state and national music teacher associations (MLMTA, PMTA  and MTNA).

Bonnie's interests include all aspects of nature and animals, cooking, art, reading, sewing, attending concerts and museums.  She has a very musically talented daughter, Kristine, who also has many interests.  They are members at Hopewell UMC.  Bonnie has been on staff at Covenant Presbyterian Church for about twelve years and also enjoys many friendships here.
